Worth Matravers, Dorset, UK

Easily accessible by car but the perfect isolated and quiet weekend getaway for singles, couples, families and groups. Worth Matravers is surrounded by dramatic coast line, steeped in history and geological marvels and has a cracking little pub too. It really is a hidden gem waiting to be explored.

With the Everly Trails routes you’ll explore wonders such as Dancing Ledge, Chapman’s Pool, Swyre Head, Corfe Castle and dinosaur footprints.

Suggested Itinerary

Day 1

Make your way to your 18th Century Cottage and settle in. When you’re ready, head out on the five mile Dancing Ledge route and take your first steps on the Jurassic Coast section of the South West Coast Path heading East. If it’s a nice day, or if you’re brave, take a dip in the man made pool at Dancing Ledge. Head up the hill to Spyway to warm up and along The Priest’s Way to see the dinosaur footprints. Return to Worth Matravers to light the log burner back at the cottage or head to The Square and Compass for a local tipple.

Day 2

Long walk day. Today’s thirteen mile (or a shorter eight mile) loop heads back down to the Coast Path but today you head West. You’ll walk past many landmarks today. Up and around Winspit Quarry and on to St Aldhelm’s Head where the volunteers at the National Coastguard Institution will be more than happy to give you the tour of the lookout. If you’re lucky, they’ll have some tea and cakes for a donation. Onwards to walk around Chapman’s Pool, Houns Tout and up to Swyre Head for the only 360 degree view of the Purbecks with views as far as Portland. Along the Ridgeway to Kingston and a quick stop at the Kingston Arms with stunning views to Corfe Castle. Head back to Worth Matravers through the woods and fields for a well earned dinner.

Day 3

Today you have a few options. A full ten mile loop to Corfe Castle and back (the way back is harder). Taking in the National Trust’s site, sweet shop and pubs. Or after yesterday, perhaps a walk there and bus back to a mile long walk back into Worth. Maybe a dip at Dancing Ledge again? Short and long options before you bid the coast farewell and head back home thinking about your next adventure.
